How to choose your guinea pig.
Choosing & Buying a Guinea Pig
Guinea pigs are exceptionally social creatures, they love having other guineas around. They can become lonely by themselves, and they will be at a disadvantage if they are lonely.
While only one guinea pig is probably sufficient to keep you company. You must think seriously about planning to purchase two guinea pigs or more.
Guinea pigs need attention. If they become very lonely they begin to behave as if trying to get your attention. If there is more than one guinea around they will surely keep each other entertained.
The question is do we get 2 females, 2 males or opposites sex male and female.
Let us consider the couples:
Females tend to be docile, so there is no potential harm of keeping both together.
Males tend to be a bit more energetic and may need more space and exercise and if there is not enough room they my disagree and fight. Keep this in mind.
If you put two male guinea pigs in one cage , you should not introduce a female guinea pig to the cage. The males will fight to dominate the female since this is their natural instincts.
The female cycle is 18 days and the gestation of guinea pigs is about two months . Amazingly, two healthy guinea pigs can produce birth to practically dozens of puppies in a 12 month interval.
Guinea Pigs… guinea pigs and more guinea pigs, Of course the result of male and female in a cage. So be careful of unintentional breeding!!
The next question you will surely be asking is " What am I going do with all these piggy babies !!

Adopting a Guinea Pig?
Thinking About Adopting a Guinea Pig?
Before getting a pet you should do some research..
Do you have the dedication, finances, space and love to give to a new animal?
What do you know about guinea pigs?
If you consider guinea pigs to be a beginner pet, caring for a
guinea pig appropriately often requires more work and awareness than a cat or dog -
They are by no means low-maintenance animals, and should not be viewed as such.
What to Expect
A guinea pig is the right pet for you if:
You are able to provide a home for the piggy for about a 5 - 7 years which is about the lifespan of a guinea pig.
It is best to adopt a guinea pig whose personality fits in with your home and family. Guinea pigs have different characters, so try to choose one that is a great match for you and your family.
You are committed to offering the best possible care, including,
but not limited to:
Appropriate habitats that offer an adequate amount of space to maximize your pigs enjoyment.
A quality diet, with food items such as hay, pellets, fresh vegetables and a supplement of vitamin C.
Veterinary attention by a vet who is qualified in guinea pig care.
Social life
Guinea pigs are THIGMOTACTIC, which means they like to snuggle up to others of their kind.
All guinea pigs are adopted in pairs (or trios) or as a friend for an existing guinea.
Guinea pigs are very social and enjoy the company of each other.
Exercise is vital for a contented, healthy pig!
There is a change in the disposition of a piggy, as it is moved from
a small cage to a larger environment, the change is exciting and dramatic!
They will start squealing with delight, running around and jumping up with delight!
Children and Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs are fragile animals and so, young children should be
supervised when holding them to be sure they do not squeeze them too tightly or drop them on the ground.
In addition, young children cannot be expected to be fully responsible for their pets.
A adult should help in their care to ensure adequate food and fresh water is supplied every day.
A clean cage should be always maintained, and early detection of sickness is always a plus.
What to Expect
You should have your cage ready before the pigs go home.
To assist you with this process, we suggest you shop around for
cube/coroplast cages, be sure not to buy one that is too small.
A guinea pig cage is never too large as they like a lot of room.
You can also buy cage materials to assemble a standard cage on your own.
Various types of Guinea Pigs.
The American
This breed is identified as the English Cavy. The coat is smooth to the body.
This is the generally prevalent and commonly seen breed.
Abyssinian
The Abyssinian has a very distinctive exterior. The coat is made up of multiple swirls of mane referred to as rosettes.
Their mane is quite dense and coarse, and it radiates in circles from multiple points on the body, to turn into up a sequence of whirls.
For exhibition purposes, Abyssinian should have a bare minimum of 8 rosettes, in a symmetrical pattern.
These guinea pigs always appear dishevelled.
Of course there are more breeds which can also be investigated.
Who are these two guinea pigs in my profile above?
They are called the dynamic duo, up for adoption at kijiji.com.
I got permission from Joseph (thanks Joseph) to do a follow up on
these cuties as they journey on the route to their new home.
Hopefully we get the new parents permission to follow up on their route.
ANY COMMENTS !!!
